Rose and Scout are the family's two dogs, both of whom were rescued. Rose is a Newfoundland/Retriever mix, while Scout is a Bernese/Retriever mix. Like all dogs, they have distinct personalities. Rose loves to have her ears rubbed. Scout just wants to be pet all day long.
Recently, Rose has developed a fondness for her dog jacket and now waits for it before going outside, especially in rainy or snowy weather. Today, I witnessed something remarkable. Rose's jacket was upstairs in the garage. I went up the stairs and said to both dogs, "Rose, do you want your jacket to go outside?" (Yes, I talk to the dogs.) At that moment, both dogs went to the garage door. Scout followed me in, touched the jacket with his nose, then ran over to Rose and nudged her while looking at me. Rose approached me and sat down, waiting for the jacket. Once it was on, Scout jumped up as if to say, "Good job!" (Or to say, "Let's get outside now! I am tired of waiting.")
Animals are much smarter than we often realize. I hope this gave you a smile today. Photos of these two characters are below.
