Calm the nerves!

Writer: Susan OlsonSusan Olson

Today marks a significant milestone in my artistic journey, as it is the day I have been eagerly anticipating for quite some time! Celebration of Creativity, is set to open its doors tonight and will continue to showcase a diverse array of artistic expressions throughout this entire weekend. This event is not just a fleeting moment; it represents the culmination of an extensive year-long process filled with dedication, hard work, and passion. It all began back in January 2024 with the rigorous application and approval process, a crucial step that laid the foundation for what was to come. After jury approval, there was a palpable sense of excitement mixed with impatience as I found myself in a phase of ‘hurry up and wait,’ eagerly counting down the days until I could dive into the next steps of preparing my artwork.

As the months progressed, I began the meticulous task of compiling the inventory list, which required careful organization and attention to detail. This was followed by creating labels for each piece, packaging the art with care to ensure it would arrive in pristine condition, and finally delivering everything in March 2025. Each step of this process was not without its challenges, but it was all part of the journey that has led me to this moment.

Among the various pieces I was asked to create, I focused on producing 24 unique Wall Sticks, which demanded a significant portion of my creative energy and time during the first three months of the year. These Wall Sticks are not just mere decorations; they are a reflection of my life as an artist. In addition to these, I also crafted a selection of Standing Sticks, Cube Puzzles, and intricately designed boxes, each with its own story and flair. I hope that attendees see that the variety in my work showcases my versatility as an artist and my desire to explore different mediums and forms of expression.

Whew! It has indeed been an immense amount of work, but every ounce of effort has been worth it... or at least I hope so. This is where the nerves begin to creep in, as I find myself hoping that my creations will be well received. Most importantly, I am anxious to see if my pieces will find new homes and be purchased by those who resonate with my work. The anticipation is palpable, and I can hardly contain my excitement as the opening approaches. In the meantime, I have gained invaluable insights into how to harness my creativity under pressure—admittedly, much of that pressure has been self-imposed, driven by my passion for my craft and the desire to succeed. This experience has not only tested my artistic skills but has also taught me resilience and the importance of believing in my vision. As the evening unfolds, I am ready to embrace whatever comes next, hopeful and excited for the journey ahead.
